Définir et mesurer l’intelligence

 

Le grand nombre de modèles théoriques, d’essais sur le sujet montre l’extrême difficulté à cerner cette notion, à la définir et encore plus à la mesurer.

En nous appuyant sur quelques dates-phares, nous pourrons donner quelques repères montrant l’évolution des pensées et quelles sont celles qui ont prédominé.

Ainsi une première période, 1921 : en effet, pour avancer sur cette « problématique », le « Journal of Educational Psychology » demanda à un groupe de psychologues de tenter de donner une définition de ce qu’est l’intelligence. Il en résulta un nombre de réponses conséquent.

Dans le cadre deux études réalisées en 1986 et une troisième effectuée en 1987, Synderman & Rothman débouchèrent sur le même constat : une multitude de définitions mais quand même quelques caractéristiques obtenant des avis convergents.

La liste ci-dessous résume ces éléments « consensuels » :

  • Capacité à mener des raisonnements abstraits, résoudre de nouveaux problèmes, à acquérir de nouvelles connaissances / compétences et à s’adapter à l’environnement
  • Capacité de mémorisation, de vitesse mentale, capacités linguistiques et mathématiques…
  • Culture générale et créativité…

 

Un point particulier à noter : la notion d’adaptabilité de l’intelligence est celle que l’on retrouve dans l’essentiel des définitions proposées par les différents auteurs. Ce que confirmait Weschler (1944) : « l’intelligence est la capacité complexe ou globale d’un sujet à agir en fonction d’un but / objectif, de penser rationnellement et d’avoir des rapports efficaces avec son environnement ». Piaget (1970) le reprend avec cette phrase : « l’intelligence, c’est l’adaptation ».
