Stress, Coping, historique et évolution de ces notions

 

Avant toute chose, il est essentiel que de repréciser d’où viennent ces notions de stress, de coping et de les définir. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons entre autres sur les travaux de Lazarus et Folkman (1984) pour lesquels le stress est une « transaction particulière entre un individu et une situation dans laquelle celle-ci est évaluée comme débordant ses ressources et pouvant mettre en danger son bien-être ».

Concrètement, cela signifie que les évènements qui surviennent dans la vie affectent très différemment les individus. L’impact varie d’un sujet à l’autre. Il est important de préciser que ce ne sont ni leur fréquence, leur intensité ou même leur « gravité objective » qui sont stressantes en soi mais leur « charge émotionnelle » et leur signification pour la personne concernée. On observe à ce sujet que du concept d’évènement de vie stressant (Amiel-Lebigre, 1996 ; Cohen et Williamson, 1988), on passe progressivement à celui de stress perçu. Les travaux de Lazarus et Folkman (1984) avec leur approche transactionnelle contribuent à la clarification de cette notion de stress et ouvrent la voie à d’autres concepts tels que celui en particulier du coping.

Un sujet confronté à une situation stressante réagira d’une manière très différente d’un autre individu. Il ne va pas subir passivement cette nouvelle donne. Il va essayer de faire face – to cope – de réagir pour maîtriser, réduire ou plus simplement tolérer la situation. Lazarus et Folkman donnent la définition suivante à cette notion de « coping » : il s’agit de l’ensemble des efforts cognitifs et comportementaux destinés à maîtriser, réduire ou tolérer les exigences internes ou externes qui menacent ou dépassent les ressources de l’individu ».

On parle donc de « coping » pour désigner la manière de s’ajuster aux situations difficiles. Ce mot renvoie ainsi, d’une part à l’existence d’un problème réel ou supposé, d’autre part, à la mise en œuvre d’une réponse pour affronter cet évènement stressant.

Le coping est donc de réflexion très récente (Lazarus, 1966) et il est intéressant de relier cette notion à celles plus anciennes des mécanismes de défense, développée depuis la fin du XIXe siècle par la psychanalyse, d’adaptation développée depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle.
